Blushing Bride
She came to me and told me she was getting married and blushed furiously. How cute! Then, panic struck in and I asked after the mandatory congratulations, "How long will you be on leave?" Being in-charge of a team sucks sometimes and meeting targets even more, but I like my jam and preserves along with the bread and butter, so I did my job and winced inside to see a tiny cloud crowd her glowing face.

Sic.. A nicer way would be to ask what plans she had for her wedding/honeymoon, setting up a home..people apply for leave,don't they- you would have gotten to know anyway.The conversation about the plans would give an impression of being interested ,and give you an indication of how long she would take to get back.
Tough call. You did good remembering to assess the impact on your team.... and hurrah for her :)
Suzie, you know what a social savant I can be, don't you? I'll keep that in mind, however.
Elizabeth, it's so tough sometimes when I have to deal with issues of this sort.
